SymposiumsFor the past two years, Westminster Community Charter School, supported by the partnership with M&T Bank, has opened its doors to host a series of literacy symposiums. These symposiums offer teachers in Western New York the unique opportunity to learn from other teachers. The Westminster staff, who have been trained in the Teachers College Reading and Writing curriculum and methods, open their classrooms as lab sites where participating teachers can observe demonstration lessons in Reading and Writing Workshop. Each symposium also has featured seminars conducted by Westminster Staff Developer Rob Ross, a former Teachers College staff developer. The seminars have included topics ranging from assessment to “hot new books,” and offer participants a glimpse into the theory that they will see in practice in the lab sites. Our goal is to provide a forum that will help to create a community of learners among educators and strengthen the teaching of literacy in Western New York.
